Andrew McCarthy writes at National Review on the debate this week between President Obama and Mitt Romney. And it was an amazing performance from both candidates. Romney was at the top of his game, armed with facts and figures that had our Affirmative Action President back on his heels and unable to respond with much more than bumper stickers and slogans.
For Obama the main problem was that he was without his usual screens to protect him. Used to having prepared speeches, handlers and teleprompters, he is out of his element when he actually has to think on his feet and answer real questions on policy. His failure at the debate was on display for all to see.
One of the results from this first debate is the deflation of the Obama construct that we have all been fed these last four years that he is The Smartest President Ever. What we saw instead was an amateur who was bored, lazy and unprepared. For those of us who have been paying attention this comes as no surprise. But many Americans who are not political junkies were probably quite shocked to see something very different than the narrative that has been presented by the state controlled media. Those Americans who have been fed a steady diet of adulation for The Chicago Jesus have now got a real view of the President and it was not flattering. Instead, we got to see the real Obama. The one who is intellectually shallow and self-aggrandizing. Not a pretty picture.
At the same time we also got to see the real Mitt Romney who is also different than the Obama-generated media cartoon. That too was probably a shock to many people; it certainly was to Chrissy Matthews, who had a nervous breakdown on air. But if you were a regular voter, you got to see a guy who was clear on his ideas and policy and who knows what he wants to do and where he want to lead. The propaganda cutout that has been provided for us was knocked down in one 90 minute debate.
And on a related note I just have to mention this New Yorker cover. As you can see, it shows Romney debating The Empty Chair, a reference to the Clint Eastwood bit at the Republican National Convention that was so popular. The YouTube vid got millions of hits, more than just about any other from the convention and quickly brought us “National Empty Chair Day.” Lots of people had fun with that one. Except for Obama of course. To see this cover coming from The New Yorker is to understand that The Elite Media Monoculture know that Obama is probably a goner and is not going to win another term. How different is this cover from the one that showed an “O” in place of the moon rising over the Lincoln Memorial at night. The game is up and the old media lefties know it.
