Pulling the Cart and Riding in the Cart

The Washington Post reports on the most recent manufactured scandal to come out of The Elite Media Monoculture. In this story, Mitt Romney is speaking to supporters and donors and analyzing the election dynamics. He argues that 47% of the population will support The Obama-Fuhrer because they are dependent on government money and will not vote for those who would diminish their booty.

Naturally the Old Media is having a cow about this statement and trying to prop up the “Romney is an uncaring rich guy” narrative that they believe will cause us all to vote for the Chicago Jesus. I remain skeptical that Americans are that stupid, or that they will disagree with Romney’s basic argument.

Romney may have been off regarding the percentage that he used; I don’t think it is quite as high as he indicated. But Romney is not wrong on his basic premise. There is a portion of the population that has become dependent on government largess and expects it to be paid as a right, no matter what.

We recently saw a major recall effort in Wisconsin that was about this very issue. Public sector unions that want as much as they can get regardless of the effects on the rest of society are draining state and federal budgets.

Chicago teachers want a 16% raise during one of the worst economic periods in memory while the city is going deeper into the red every day. Who do they think is going to pay the bills? Why do they think that they are entitled to such an increase when a private sector worker is lucky to get 2% a year if they still have a job at all?

Did not Obama himself just radically alter the work requirements of welfare put into place by President Clinton and a Republican congress? What purpose does this serve if not to create even more dependency?

Romney is not wrong about dependency and how corrosive it is, or that the Democrats are encouraging it to increase their vote totals. The Democrats don’t want you to be independent because then you have no use for them, and that would mean the end of their party and their power.
