This is not a good bill in a perfect world. And many on the right are upset that Trump signed it given how much it gave to the Democrats. But Obama did hollow out the military worse than people know. And because it’s not a budget in the constitutional sense, just an “Omnibus”, there may be a lot of wiggle room that the Dems didn’t consider. (This is why they gave Obama no budgets during his 8 years)
Over at Conservative Treehouse, some commenters point out that not all is doom and gloom. Yes, we would want to have a better bill if we could get one. But we won’t get much more from our RINO Republicans who are still entrenched in the Congress. That said, we should remember that the rot against which we are fighting goes deep and a long way back. It will take a lot of time and effort to put things right. Remember that Bannon said that the Establishment would not give up easily. They will pull out all the stops to keep their power and position. This fight is still in its early stages. We have a long way to go.
For Trump, there is also a learning curve. Trump is new to politics. Some things take time. And there is a difference between a true budget and an omnibus.
The relevant part of the constitution discussing budgets is thus:
No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of
Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of the
Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from
time to time.
An omnibus doesn’t count as “a regular statement of account of receipts and expenditures.” That is why Congress never gave Obama a true budget. A real budget is strictly written; this bill is not. That gave Obama the freedom to spend as he wanted to, which of course he did.
