President Stompy Foot came out today to proclaim that he is willing to negotiate with Republicans, as long as he gets everything he wants and the Republicans don’t get anything at all. USA Today has the story, which will make you laugh if you have any short-term memory left.
President Obama said Monday he is “eager and ready” to negotiate with Republicans on the budget and other issues, but not until the House GOP votes to reopen the government and increase the debt ceiling.
“I’m happy to talk to Republicans about anything,” Obama said during a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, where he took his campaign against the shutdown, which is in its seventh day.
Obama again called on the Republican-run House to pass a spending plan and raise the debt ceiling with no conditions.
But the optics of this must be really bad in the internal polling because that’s not what he was saying just a few days ago. Reuters reported the story here on Yahoo News.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama stressed to congressional leaders on Wednesday that he will not negotiate with Republicans over a government shutdown or raising the U.S. debt limit, the White House said.
After more than an hour of talks at the White House that did not lead to a breakthrough, the White House issued a statement saying that Obama remains hopeful that “common sense will prevail” in the budget standoff.
“The president made clear to the leaders that he is not going to negotiate over the need for Congress to act to reopen the government or to raise the debt limit to pay the bills Congress has already incurred,” the White House said.
